Robert Millis(ロバート・ミリス) "INDIAN TALKING MACHINE" He presents an illustrated lecture about shellac 78 rpm records (in Japan:“SP records”), about the early history of recording, Indian classical music, and about his recent book INDIAN TALKING MACHINE published by Sublime Frequencies. The result of a year in India as a Senior Fulbright Research Scholar, his talk features recordings of rare 78 rpm records, films shot by Millis of life and music in India, and a glimpse into the traditional thousands of years old shellac industry (records were made of shellac prior to vinyl). Millis will also touch on his work with Japanese 78 rpm collectors and discuss famed musicologist DEBEN BHATTACHARYA who until his death in 2001 travelled the world recording traditional music. In 1955, Deben drove a van from Paris through the Middle East and into India, making astounding recordings along the way. PARIS TO CALCUTTA: MEN and MUSIC on the DESERT ROAD produced by Millis is about this journey and was recently released by Sublime Frequencies. ロバート・ミリス氏のプロフィール Robert Millis is a musician, Fulbright scholar and sound artist.
